I have long included narrative as an
important part of my work, but a few
years ago I felt that I wanted to change
my tone and expression. I consciously
relaxed the representational in favour
of freer forms and interpretations of my
stories. I set myself challenges such as
painting with "ugly colours" (e.g.
purple and mint green) in order to find
new ways and expressions. I wanted to
both broaden and deepen what I had to
convey, and I also wanted to explore how
this could be further developed in new
media.
I like to work in many
different layers. On a plexi disc, I can
have collage from below, paint with oil on
top, and leave some unpainted so that
the collage layer is visible. Sometimes
I combine collage, painting and
encaustic to get the shifts I'm looking
for. I have also started to work with
collage in 3D, where I use several glass
domes in each other, and let the
different collage layers play against
each other.
It's a journey of
discovery that right now is about needs.
The need for balance, and the need for
security. It is also about processes.
How disintegration, destruction and
decay are transformed into new forms and
new layers.
